Integrating the Web of Science web-services API into the Leeds Met Repository

Use case 3

Narrative

Utilise the data in Web of Science to incorporate citation linking into search results returned by the repository Open Search interface and/or easily retrieve this data for research administration purposes; the Research Excellence Framework (REF) that will replace the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2010 is likely to make greater use of quantitative measures of assessment, such as bibliometrics. The need exists, therefore, to implement technologies that facilitate the extraction and collation of relevant data for use by institutions, individual academics and HEFCE.

Actors – goal(s) – extension(s)

Primary actor | goal(s) | extension(s)

Thomson Reuters Article Match Retrieval (AMR) Web Service | sends request to WoS for each article using article unique ID | ID has to have originated from WoS so will not work with records that have not been retrieved from WoS

  • Other actors | goal(s) | extension(s)

User | searches OA portal | AMR returns citation information for each article; times cited is displayed alongside results – this may or may not be appropriate – requires consultation (e.g. if times cited = 0; do not display?)

AND/OR

Research administrator | searches private implementation of AMR (i.e. not publicly accessible) to retrieve times cited information | for research admin/REF only

Stakeholders and Interests

University Research Office – straightforward method of retriving times cited information for admin/REF

Repository Team – potential to provide evidence of putative link between OA and citation

Researchers – institutional/public visibility of research impact

Main Success Scenario(s)

Times cited info in incorporated into search results and/or is available for administration purposes

Times cited increases as a consequence of a papers availability OA
